Tartan. The transitional tour de force…

As homage, I thought I’d rock out my own sartorial tarty party.

And yep, leopard (luxe uniform) and I are still going strong so it felt right to be pairing it with the chieftains finest.

It’s not just for Queen E’s corgies

It’s not just for Mcqueen’s couture.

I want us all to fly the plaid flag.

So chequerboard chic at the ready, here’s a how-to on luxing like a flag pole. Properly.

Pick a colour: Any colour, so long as it’s black/white/red/purple or green. No to pink – save that one for the toddlers unless you’ve budgeted for Celine. No to yellow – cos Clueless, that was Last year. And if you must parade a pastel plaid – avoid standing stationary by a doorway, there’s nothing more demoralising than being confused for a draught excluder. Sorry Stella M – not for me.

Pair with pattern: Sounds tricky, it’s not. This is English eccentric par excellence. Florcore it up and  pair a kilt with your Nan’s floral blouse. Keep the accessories modern – a little mannish even – like a flat ankle boot (Chloe/Toga or similar) or new season backpack (Jill Sander/Cos for the win). I paired my shirt-dress with leopard. Cos i love it. But any ode to animal/floral/fantasia should keep the look high-fash.

Plaid Flash: Some will arrive to the tarty party looking for just a flirt. That’s ok. But for no strings attached plaid play. listen up; for instant tart, whip on a bright chequered scarf and keep everything else super neutral. If you’re type 1 bretonista – stay there, it’s not your fault. If you’re type 2 – your inner chieftain’s in there somewhere, so give those stripe slaves a day off. And if this is all sounding like hard work, if you’re game plan’s more super minimal/noir even, do *brit-girl chic and tie a plaid ribbon in your hair or around your wrist, or his if you prefer.

nb. brit girl: a nod to the old skool not back-at-school chic.

If any of this is floating your plaid boat, if you’ve found your inner tartanista

Tell her to potter on down to the shops (summer sale season’s started).

Then have her make some chequered investment (ready to rock into 2015).

She’ll be totes amazed.

And I’ll be totes impressed. Tres chic.
