The problem with a polka dot print is..

There is no problem.

Ever since Mr. Luxe pricked up his ears and wolf whistled at Gwen Stefani in that Don’t Speak video, I’ve made sure to keep white and blue polka dots on repeat in the luxe capsule hoardrobe. Yep. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. And in fairness to Gwen, what she does with a smattering of dots and a crimson lip deserves a clap.

Polka dots are now doing a roaring trade on the high street after some serious fash-plugging from the heavy weights. I was polka playing back in 2010 grazie Miu Miu,  but spots are now officially trending thanks to Stella M. Marc Jacobs and personal luxe fave David Koma – I got a polka preview with major crush on ‘Dave’ at the British Fashion Awards back last year. Swoon.

I digress.

So we’re all agreed polka dots are a basic. And basically if you don’t have any, it’s time.

.

And me?

With this little ensemble, I did *Jenna Lyons proud and paired the establishment with florals. Pairing of prints is totes on trend, plus we all know I like to throw in a flor-ball. Shirty polka needed a playmate, cue my weekend purchase – floaty shorts – currently pitching for a place in capsule vacay. Think crease-defying/summer tan-exposing/whippet weigh-in …luxe dreamy.

*Jenna Lyons – errr Girl Boss at J Crew, TIMES 100 most influential people, if it’s good enough for her…

For non floral fanciers, stripes will score you equally high-fash brownie points. Vogue put in a strong argument for and against the “unification” of all this print action. I must read it. In the mean time, Florcore bottom v’s Polkaplay top is, in summer, a pretty strong sartorial algorithm.

For any of you luxers out there toying with popping a few shapes/stripes/prints. I’ve prepared some pointers for harmonising your florals and sporting your spots – and I’ll keep it simple and  spring/summer hot. Obvs!

To start. Whatever print you pair, stick to a colour scheme. Blue and white was my theme

Then. Contrasting smaller prints looks great, but if one print is larger, keep the other/s small. Big, overbearing blooms? We’re not teacosies peeps.

Finally. whenever luxing plentiful prints, keep the accessories minimal – too much is just TOO much.

Voila. Print lecture complete. It’s sunny, so I’m off to go pitch a spot down by the sea, might befriend a beach hut and a stripey chair or two. but ONLY if it’s the right blue.
