London: trouser suiting… a trade off to never having had a proper job?

Truth is the closest I came to a proper job was donning a John Rocha twinset at 38,000ft whilst pointing to the exit signs and explaining to rows 40-45 the many creative reasons why we’d ran out of chicken and beef.

Alas now I’m a self-titled fashion blogger; talking about very topical crisis like the price-hike at Balenciaga and the impossible algorithm woes on insta.

But never one to miss a fashion beat – i wanted to touch base after Fashion Month and talk about the very unrelenting trouser suit trend taking over my wardrobe. Once reserved for Maths teachers and Marlene Dietrich; the tough-girl tailored trouser suit is officially talk of the town. It’s street-style uniform according to Vogue online and though I tucked in at LFW; I made sure to ease in gently, with a hot pink Ganni ensemble which sold out immediately {replicated perfectly here}. For Paris I avoided suiting completely for fear of tailored-typecasting.

But I’m back on home turf now and fully committed to hoovering up every decent trouser suit this side of the Watford Gap.

Some hacks on trouser-suiting it up:

The 2018 take is 80’s ‘Power Suiting’ – an easy shape to nail and adapt to your own personal style.

-If you’re a petite height like me {5’4} and feel swamped in matchy tailoring play with proportions; a short jacket to emphasise your waist, or a cropped leg to show off your ankles. I often look for a wider trouser leg which falls over my shoe to make me appear taller.

-If you’re not a fan of ground-breaking gelato hues for spring {sorry not sorry}; try a bright block colour. Crayola brights are trending with brilliant blue being the primary colour of choice, but I’m also loving the warmer yellows and oranges doing the rounds.

-Chuck a trench coat over the top; layering is still ruling the street-style air waves and always seems to bring a look together regardless of what’s underneath.

-Simplicity is key; I swear by a comfy trainer and white tee for when I want to look put together without trying too hard. Invest in basic cotton tee’s and tanks now before the good ones sell out.

I really want to find a denim suit in a darker colour-way; kind of inspired by tumblr and the Scandi girls right now. But also check and gingham prints circa Clueless… because let’s be honest, we all wanted to be Cher at some point in our teenage dirtbag lives.

  • Love this Lorna and a power suit is a wardrobe essential for me. Having also been an air hostess, I think it helps evolve personal style as you see so many different people from different places and different cultures on the daily that you can’t help be inspired and influenced. Never mind the endless shopping opportunities…
